Preschool Matters
When thinking about preschool there are varying philosophies and programs to consider when choosing the preschool best for your child and family. In general, a preschool will describe itself as play-based or academic. A purely play-based model will allow children to develop skills through play centers in the classroom. The teacher will gently guide the students as they gain and develop new skills. A purely academic philosophy will be more teacher directed, with a greater emphasis on getting the student ready for kindergarten. When choosing the preschool that is best for your child, consider what you value in your child's early education.
We can only guess what skills children will need in the future. Who would have thought ten years ago children would see tablets, computers and Smart phones as common place in their lives? We can however be sure of something in the future. Those who will succeed will be those who can communicate with others, are curious about the world and those who have the flexibility of mind to find solutions to problems they encounter. These are foundational skills and need to start in the preschool years and beyond.
The focus of the Whitman-Hanson Preschool Academy is to help students develop these foundational skills. Although children learn letters and numbers through hands on experiences that challenge them at varying levels, they also gain a sense of self; build confidence and assurance that they can do things for themselves. Children learn how to compromise, be respectful and problem-solve in an environment that is safe. Children develop these skills through play situations that are explicitly planned by the teacher in the classroom allowing children the flexibility to direct their own outcome. The program balances academic expectations with a play based philosophy. Each classroom has a certified teacher and a paraprofessional. The teachers are touching the lives of our youngest learners and teaching them the powerful lessons that will carry them through a lifetime of learning.
If you would like to learn more about the Preschool Academy, housed at the Whitman-Hanson Regional High School, we will be hosting an informational night in February in the library at the High School. Please see the news page for the date and time. If you have any questions or would like to tour the preschool please call Tricia Poirier-Collins at 781-618-7116. Children are eligible for preschool if they will be three by August 31st, but will not be five prior to August 31st.
