Title I Family Engagement

Whitman-Hanson Regional School District

Title I Family Engagement

The Whitman-Hanson Regional School District is committed to building meaningful partnerships among schools, families, caregivers, and the community to support student achievement, well-being, and success. Our Family Engagement Procedure is designed to ensure that families and caregivers are active and valued partners in the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of Title I programs.

The district’s Family Engagement Procedure incorporates the required district-level and school-level components of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and provides families and caregivers with meaningful opportunities to share their perspectives, ask questions, provide feedback, and participate in decisions related to Title I programs.

Title I Schools

The following Whitman-Hanson Regional School District schools currently receive Title I funding:

Conley Elementary School Duval Elementary School
Whitman Middle School

Each Title I school will:

  1. Convene at least one annual meeting for families and caregivers of participating students at a convenient time to explain the school’s participation in Title I, the requirements of Title I, and opportunities for family engagement.

  2. Involve families and caregivers in the planning, implementation, and review of Title I programs and activities.

  3. Provide families and caregivers with timely information about Title I programs, including information about how Title I funds and services support student learning and achievement.

  4. Explain the curriculum and academic assessments used at the school, including information about the academic standards students are expected to meet and their expected proficiency levels.

  5. Provide opportunities for regular meetings, when requested by families and caregivers, to formulate suggestions and participate in decisions related to their children’s education. The school and district will respond to suggestions as soon as practicably possible.

  6. Provide information and opportunities for participation in accessible formats and, when appropriate, in families’ home languages so that language, disability, or other barriers do not prevent meaningful participation.

Family Engagement Procedure

The Whitman-Hanson Regional School District develops and reviews its Title I Family Engagement Procedure with input from families and caregivers, school and district staff, and other members of the school community.

The procedure describes how the district and Title I schools will:

  • Build strong, respectful, and reciprocal relationships with families and caregivers.
  • Include families in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Title I programs.
  • Provide multiple opportunities for families to share feedback and participate in decision-making.
  • Support culturally responsive and multilingual family engagement.
  • Share information about curriculum, assessments, student progress, and Title I programs.
  • Partner with PTOs and other parent/caregiver organizations.
  •  Identify and address barriers that may limit family participation.

Teacher Qualifications and Right to Know

The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) establishes requirements regarding teacher qualifications. Under ESSA, teachers must meet applicable Massachusetts licensure requirements and demonstrate subject matter competency for the areas in which they provide instruction.

Whitman-Hanson Regional School District is committed to ensuring that students are taught by appropriately licensed and qualified educators and that staff members are appropriately assigned based on their licensure, qualifications, and areas of expertise.

Parents and guardians of students attending a Title I school have the right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of their child's classroom teachers and paraprofessionals.

Upon request, parents/guardians may obtain information regarding:

  1. Whether their child's teacher has met Massachusetts qualifications and licensing criteria for the grade level and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction.

  2. Whether their child's teacher is teaching under an emergency license, waiver, or other authorization through which state qualifications or licensing requirements have been waived.

  3. The teacher's baccalaureate degree major and any graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, including the field or discipline of the certification or degree.

  4. Whether their child receives services from paraprofessionals and, if so, information regarding the paraprofessional's qualifications.

Whitman-Hanson Regional School District is committed to providing high-quality instruction and support to every student. Families who would like to request information about the qualifications of their child's teacher or paraprofessional should contact their child's school principal or the district's Title I/Grant Administrator.
