Navigating the College Process for Students with Learning Disabilities

Whitman Hanson guidance counselors are committed to helping each student, including students with learning disabilities, to formulate a post high school plan. Parents are invited to work closely with their child’s guidance counselor and Special Education team to develop a specific plan for success. Many of our students with learning disabilities are intent on pursing a college degree and the resources below, along with assistance from guidance counselors, can help both the student and the parents to navigate the college process.

Books:

K&W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Disabilities or Attention Deficit Disorder by Marybeth Kravets and Imy F. Wax. This book outlines the admissions procedures for students with learning disabilities, and shows the number of staff a university devotes to assisting students with disabilities. Advice from specialists in the field of learning disability programs discuss admission requirements and graduation policies; services available to students with learning disabilities at each college such as tutors, note-takers, oral exams, extended test time; names, phone numbers, and email addresses of program administrators at each school; and strategies for finding the right program for each student's needs.
